As the name implies, Lake in the Hills has lakes - four of them. Woods Creek Lake is the largest with two swimming areas - Indian Trail Beach and Butch Haggle Beach. Goose Lake, Willow Lake and Lake Scott are all shallow lakes. Goose Lake is utilized mainly for fishing while Willow Lake and Lake Scott are wildlife ponds.
Lake in the Hills was once a small residential community with farms dotting the surrounding landscape. Paved streets and major thoroughfares now mask the dirt roads and quieter times. However, a few original farms and fieldstone foundations still stand today as reminders of our past. The history of Lake in the Hills
started in 1923, when Federal Judge Walter J. La Buy began purchasing property around what is now Woods Creek Lake, the Village's main lake. In September of 1950, the Property Owners Association (P.O.A.) was formed specifically to provide snow removal and road maintenance. This was the beginning
of the first organized Village decision-making body. On November 29, 1952, the Village of Lake in the Hills was incorporated. State-of-the-art medical facilities are also nearby. Good Shepherd Hospital, Northern Illinois Medical Center and Sherman Hospital’s Ambutal Medical Center are some of the options available to Lake in the Hills residents. Lake in the Hills residents are served by four school districts, which are separate from Village government. District 300 covers a large portion of the east side of Lake in the Hills , while Huntley’s District 158 covers the western portion of the Village. Crystal Lake's Districts 47 and 155 accept students residing in the
northern portions of Lake in the Hills. Lake in the Hills is also served by two community college districts - Elgin Community College and McHenry Community College. Due to the nature of growth in the school districts, residents in the Village of Lake in the Hills are encouraged to call the appropriate school districts

Village Government
The Village of Lake in the Hills has a Village President-Trustee form of government and employs a professional Village Administrator and Department Heads to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Village. The elected officials of the Village of Lake in the Hills consist of a President, six Trustees and a Village Clerk. All are elected to four-year terms. These officials are elected at-large, which is what makes Lake in the Hills a Village rather than a City.
The Village Board generally meets four times a month- in two Committee of the Whole meetings and two Board of Trustees meetings (except in November and December in which there is one Committee of the Whole meeting and one Board of Trustees meeting per month). The Board of Trustees meetings are held
on the second and fourth Thursday of every month (except November and December in which they are held only on the second Thursday of those months) at 7:30 p.m. in Village Hall. Committee of the Whole meetings are held on the Tuesday preceding the Board of Trustees meeting at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall.
